Calf Strengthening for Shin Splints - Welsh Athletics Injury Exercises Series

Both shin splints and MTSS (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome) refer to pain in the front part of the lower leg, however the term shin splints is used to refer to general pain, while MTSS refers to pain and inflammation of the inner part of the bone.

Strengthening your calves could help because your calves take in a lot of force when you run, so making sure your calves are strong can help them cope with this.

Doing Tibialis Posterior strengthening with the aid of a mini band is one exercise you could try.

In this video, Adam Rattenberry, Lead Performance Physiotherapist at Welsh Athletics shows us an example of this.
