Massage Oils, Lotions and Cremes FAQs

The following information is not meant to be in any way prescriptive and is merely content that has been compiled to help you make an informed decision about which product could suit you. Please remember to contact your physician or sports medicine professional for proper, qualified guidance.

How do I choose a massage oil?

Massage oils are typically infused with essential oils which help provide aromatherapy benefits such as relaxation and different essential oils also pose different health benefits. For a better understanding of the benefits and uses of specific Essential Oils and Carrier Oils as well as which products they can be found in, please look at the table below the products in our Massage section. Thicker massage oils work for massages with low friction so there is more glide, whereas lighter oils will work better for more demanding massages such as deep tissue massages and sports massage. Specific Fascial massage products such as Songbird fascial release are more effective when working on the fascial tissues.

Which types of massage oils and lotions are good for arthritis?

The best way to treat arthritis is with massage oils and lotions that have anti-inflammatory properties; Physique Massage Crème has chamomile and aloe vera, we also have massage oils that have anti-inflammatory properties such as our Physique Grapeseed Oil as Grapeseed oil is known to be effective when treating arthritis. We have a few other products that could be used to treat arthritis such as the Songbird Unscented Wax which has arnica in it as well as almond oil, very effective tools against arthritis pain. Finally, we have a few non-massage products that we recommend for severe arthritis pain such as Deep Relief and Biofreeze - Pain Relieving Gel. * Deep Heat should not be used as an alternative to Deep Freeze and can actually have negative effects on inflammation or swelling. Please read our Managing Arthritis Pain Buyer's Guide for more information on pain relief and arthritis

What can I use for a massage at home?

You can use any of the products in our range for a simple at-home massage. It is advisable that you get massage oil or lotion as massage waxes can be harder to work with, however, if you feel confident about using them and the properties of the products appeal to you then go for it. Therapeutic massage oils and less specific massage oils such as grapeseed oil are good choices but pick something that appeals to you, so If you have a bad neck then look at getting a massage oil or lotion with pain relief, relaxation and anti-inflammatory properties.

Which massage oils are good for sensitive skin?

All of the products we supply have either been dermatologically tested or are specifically anti-allergen which does not apply to contact dermatitis (a skin allergy to essential oils). If you want to use a safe massage oil then Grapeseed oil is a perfect recommendation. Avoid tea tree oil, lavender, and similar essential oils.

Which oil massage is good for back pain?

Physique Therapeutic Massage Oil is a great all-round massage oil but it is specifically good for back pain as it contains numerous essential oils known to be helpful with back pain. Peppermint oil, Almond Oil, Rosemary Oil and Lavender Oil are commonly used to help treat severe pain such as back pain. Other Massage Oils and products with pain relief properties can also be effective for addressing pack pain.

Which Massage oils and lotions are good for Sports Massage?

We have quite a few massage oils and lotions tailored for sports massage. Physique Sports Balm, Naqi’s range which offers numerous amazing options such as recovery gel and Songbird’s Sports products such as Sports Liquiwax are great products for sports massage. Any massage oil with warming and calming effects can essentially be used as they will help ease the muscles and reduce pain so massage oils with grapeseed, chamomile, ginger and arnica various among other ingredients can be useful for sports massage.
